Since 1989, the Family Association for Mental Health Everywhere (FAME) has been empowering families and caregivers who have a loved one with a mental health concern by providing support, education, coping skills and self-care strategies.
Supporting Family Caregivers
Families who have a loved one with a mental illness experience significant stress, which can impact their own health, relationships, careers and financial situations. Family caregivers and friends may have difficulty coping with a family member who has a mental health concern. Sometimes, it can be challenging to know how best to help a loved one. At FAME, we believe in equipping families with education to help them care for themselves and their relative, even in the face of mental health challenges.
Why We Exist
With so much attention on the statistic of 1 in 5 Canadians experiencing mental health issues we respectfully ask, “Who helps the other 4 people in that group?” This is FAME’s reason for being. FAME is deeply committed to ensuring all families and caregivers can live with hope and intention, sustained by the knowledge that they are not alone.
We Get It
We understand because we’ve been there. As an organization brought together by families, we have a thorough understanding of the challenges and emotions experienced in supporting a family member with a mental illness.
The FAME head office is currently located in Etobicoke. We serve families that are impacted by a loved one’s mental illness in the Greater Toronto Area and Peel Region through our offices in Etobicoke, Rexdale, Scarborough, Downtown Toronto, Mississauga and two locations in Brampton.
Here We Grow Again
In 2015, we opened two new offices, one in Rexdale and one in Brampton to better serve families.
- The Honourable William G. Davis Centre for Families at 60 West Drive in Brampton.
- Rexdale Community Health Centre at 8 Taber Road in Etobicoke.
We are based on a self-help model which respects and supports the expertise that families have regarding the mental health of their relative and their experience in the system.
