A Brief History

Originally named The Family Association For Mental Health in Etobicoke (FAME), the organization was founded in the late 1980’s by a group of family members who were struggling to manage and support their loved one impacted by mental health. At that time there was virtually no organizations offering support to families and caregivers. Initially FAME was a single small office located in Etobicoke that offered one to one counselling and monthly group support.

Thirty years later, FAME is now called The Family Association For Mental Health Everywhere, with seven sites located in the greater Toronto area. FAME’s head office remains true to its original roots with its head office still located in the Etobicoke community.

Evolution of our Logo
FAME’s organizational logo has a special history. It was created in 1989 by founding family member Des Aitken’s son. The logo was designed to reinforce the fact that families are at the core of our mission and our vision as an information and support agency.

In 2007, we took the initial concept a step further in order to impart a more dynamic perspective. In the new version, the family seems to be facing towards light and hope while leaving the shadows of the past behind.

In 2015, we began a process to update the logo design while retaining its essence. Our goal was to highlight the reality that 1 in 5 persons in Canada will experience a mental health concern at some point in their lives and that FAME serves the other 4 individuals in the equation: the family caregivers. As you can see below, we have added a fifth family member to the group. However, to avoid stigmatizing the person who is ill, none of the figures is designated as the family member who has a mental health issue—thus underscoring the fact that this individual could be any one of the five. We also wanted to include a Young Carer in the group, as illustrated by the smaller child and youth figures. The familiar blue colour associated with our logo connotes calm and serenity, while our new accent colour, orange, is intended to reflect the hope and resilience residing in the heart of each family caregiver. We believe that the new logo honours the original design concept while recasting it as a fresh expression of who FAME is and what we do.
